Microsoft 365 OneDrive 2 TB becomes the shared quota on Family and Premium

Microsoft 365 OneDrive 2 TB is the new rule for shared plans. Since October 8, 2026, anyone who subscribes to Microsoft 365 Family or Premium for the first time, or reactivates an expired subscription, gets Microsoft 365 OneDrive 2 TB to split among every member of the account, instead of 1 TB per person.

The Microsoft 365 OneDrive 2 TB change is on Microsoft's official storage FAQ. Current Family and Premium subscribers only move to the shared model when their subscription renews on or after May 2, 2027. New Pro subscriptions get 5 TB shared. Personal is not part of this pool rule.

What happened?

Previously, Family, Premium and Pro gave each person 1 TB of OneDrive. Because a subscription can include the owner and up to five additional people, a household using the full allowance could reach about 6 TB in total. Under the new model, Family and Premium have a single Microsoft 365 OneDrive 2 TB pool. New Pro plans have 5 TB shared.

Microsoft says shared storage means the cloud allowance applies to every member of the same subscription. Each person's mailbox, files and folders stay private. Consumer mailboxes remain limited to 100 GB, separate from the OneDrive file quota. The company also says plans can be extended up to 10 TB with paid extra storage.

Why it matters

For a family of six, the drop is large: the combined ceiling falls from up to 6 TB to Microsoft 365 OneDrive 2 TB on Family and Premium. For a solo subscriber, the effect can be the opposite. A single Family or Premium user can now use the full 2 TB instead of being capped at 1 TB.

The move lands in the middle of the memory and storage shortage that has already raised PC and SSD prices in 2026. Microsoft frames the change as a way for the quota to go where it is needed inside the subscription, rather than leaving 1 TB idle on each account. The official page does not spell out bonus storage during the transition, even though outlets such as Tom's Hardware have mentioned that possibility without public eligibility rules.

What changes in practice?

  • New Family and Premium subscribers, from October 8, 2026, already start with shared Microsoft 365 OneDrive 2 TB.
  • Current Family and Premium subscribers only migrate on renewal from May 2, 2027.
  • New Pro subscribers receive 5 TB shared.
  • Each member's files stay private; only the quota is shared.
  • Expansion up to 10 TB can be purchased, according to Microsoft.

Anyone storing photos, game backups and video on OneDrive in a family account should add up every member's usage before the 2027 renewal. If the total exceeds 2 TB, the official options are to buy more storage or change plans. The primary source is Microsoft's support page: Microsoft storage FAQs.
