Machinarium 2 was announced for PC on Steam by Amanita Design during the Triple-i Initiative showcase on October 8, 2026. The sequel to the hand-drawn adventure has no release date yet. The 2009 original told the story of Josef and Berta in a city of robots without a single line of dialogue.
What happened?
The Steam page sets the scene: after escaping the city of Machinarium, Josef and Berta crash in the barrens and find a hidden valley. Two robot tribes live there, both slowly running short of power. One occupies the Elektrona monastery high on the rocks; the other lives in the city of Oilton below.
This time the player controls both. Josef and Berta can be swapped at any moment, and their different abilities solve puzzles neither could crack alone. Communication stays wordless: thought bubbles, symbols and gestures. Mouse and gamepad are supported; Amanita says direct control of the robots is the way it considers best to play.
Why it matters
Seventeen years separate the original and the Machinarium 2 announcement. In between, Amanita released Botanicula, Chuchel, Creaks and Phonopolis, but did not signal a sequel. CEO and designer Jakub Dvorský told PC Gamer: "We're not getting any younger, and the world seems to be ending, so if we were ever going to make Machinarium 2, now is the right time." He also thanked everyone who waited.
The look remains hand-drawn, inspired by old master drawings and Renaissance landscapes. The score returns with Tomáš Dvořák, Floex from the first game, now with symphonic arrangements and a Renaissance touch, according to the official description.
