The 2019 Nintendo Switch remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening has received an unofficial native PC port called LAS Recomp. Published on GitHub by peiikai, the LAS Recomp project uses static recompilation and was developed almost exclusively with the help of Anthropic’s Claude AI via Claude Code.
What is LAS Recomp?
Unlike emulators, LAS Recomp recompiles Switch code into a native application for Windows (x86-64 with Vulkan), macOS (Apple Silicon with Metal + MetalFX) and Linux. The creator states that nearly all of the code, tooling, reverse engineering and documentation were written by the AI, with the human only directing, testing and reviewing.
The project does not distribute game files. Users must supply their own legal dump of version 1.0.0 (XCI or NSP) and the Switch’s prod.keys.
Added features in LAS Recomp
Highlights of LAS Recomp include:
- Unlocked aspect ratio support, including ultrawide;
- Built-in randomizer (items, dungeons, enemies, quests, etc.);
- Remappable controls and button prompts for multiple controllers;
- Adjustable internal resolution and performance improvements;
- In Beta 4: Mirror Mode and additional languages, including German.
LAS Recomp is still in beta (currently Beta 4) and may contain bugs. Sources: official GitHub repository and coverage from XDA Developers, TweakTown and GBAtemp.
