KUKA launches 开天 KAI Advanced Intelligence platform for factories at CIIF 2026

KUKA, a global provider of intelligent automation solutions, announced it will officially launch the 开天 KAI (KUKA Advanced Intelligence) platform during the 26th China International Industry Fair (CIIF 2026), held from October 12 to 16 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai. The theme is “AI, 具身而至” (AI that arrives in embodied form), highlighting the integration of artificial intelligence into real manufacturing.

What happened?

The 开天 KAI platform is not just an AI feature added to a robot, but a complete system for industrial factory intelligence. It is based on full data, digital twins as the virtual-real mapping layer, and multi-agents as execution units. This enables full-factory state perception, unified resource scheduling and intelligent business decisions.

The architecture is divided into five layers: L0 (devices), L1 (data), L2 (platform), L3 (agents) and L4 (applications/scenarios). Core capabilities include full-stack delivery (from consulting to IT/OT integration and agent customization), flexible modularity and an open ecosystem base centered on KUKA’s own robots, compatible with third-party equipment.

Why is this important?

China’s industrial robot industry faces challenges in data integration, flexibility for high-mix low-volume production, and the difficulty of bringing AI models from labs to real production lines, where hallucinations and uncertainty are barriers. KAI addresses this with verification via digital twins (using Visual Components CN) before deploying to real hardware.

At the fair, KUKA will present embodied intelligence product matrices based on the Eagles-X model (large and small brain), enabling “one brain for multiple machines”. Also the LBR NEXUS collaborative robot with integrated AI Vision and HMI assistant, plus automated welding solutions.

What changes in practice?

Factories will be able to have more adaptable lines for customized orders, with robots that switch tasks (transport, assembly, sorting) without complex reprogramming. Demos will include wafer handling in cleanrooms with ±0.05 mm precision, AMR logistics, casting polishing and AI-generated welding paths.

This accelerates the transition from traditional automation to Physical AI in manufacturing, especially relevant in the context of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan, which prioritizes intelligent advanced manufacturing.
