Krafton cancels PUBG Black Budget and ends the extraction spin-off

Krafton has ended development of PUBG Black Budget, the extraction spin-off positioned as the next major step for the PUBG franchise. The studio posted the decision on the game's Steam page and thanked players who joined the closed tests.

What happened to PUBG Black Budget?

In the statement, Krafton said that after reviewing the project's status and future direction, it concluded the current path would not deliver an experience players could enjoy over the long term. Development of PUBG Black Budget has therefore stopped. PUBG Studios said it will carry what it learned from testing into future projects.

PUBG Black Budget was a first-person PvEvP extraction shooter. Instead of being the last player standing, the goal was for the whole team to survive and escape. The setting was an island trapped in a time loop, with weather phenomena and anomalies meant to make each match feel different. The game went through closed alphas and community tests during 2026, about nine months after its first closed Steam alpha, according to GamesIndustry.biz.

Why the end of PUBG Black Budget matters

PUBG Black Budget is the second PUBG spin-off canceled this year. In March, Krafton shut down the free-to-play PUBG: Blindspot after two months in early access, saying it could no longer sustain the experience it had set out to deliver. Both titles had been framed as tests of the IP in new genres, while the company also talked about turning PUBG: Battlegrounds into a content platform with user-created modes.

The cancellation does not end the franchise. Krafton is still moving ahead with PUBG: Ded.Net, another spin-off shown at Gamescom in August and described as a multiplayer shooter with roguelike progression. In the second quarter, the company reported record revenue, up 94.9% to 1.29 trillion won (US$889.1 million), driven by PUBG and Subnautica 2. PUBG revenue rose 25% year over year.

What changes in practice

Players who joined the closed alphas will not see a PUBG Black Budget launch. Krafton's Steam post did not announce refunds, a replacement date, or progress migration. What is on record is the end of development and the intention to reuse what the team learned.
