Hirayasumi Anime: Episode 1 Premiere Set for NYC on October 7

The Hirayasumi anime, an adaptation of Keigo Shinzo's acclaimed manga, will host its first-ever public screening for Episode 1 in New York City on October 7, 2026. The special event is organized by VIZ Media and the Japan Society, taking place just one day before the New York Comic Con kicks off.

While the complete series won't premiere until 2027, lucky fans in New York will get an exclusive early look at the footage before the rest of the world.

What Happened?

VIZ Media confirmed a one-night-only event at the Japan Society headquarters on East 47th Street, starting at 7:00 PM local time. Following the screening, attendees can join a special panel featuring composer Kaori Sawada, producer Junichi Katsutani, and VIZ's Godswill Ugwa to discuss the journey of bringing the manga to the screen.

The announcement was originally shared on Friday (18) by Animation Magazine and IGN, following an official joint statement from VIZ and the Japan Society.

Why the Manga Matters

Hirayasumi has been serialized in Weekly Big Comic Spirits since 2021, boasting over 1.7 million copies in circulation worldwide across ten volumes. The series won the prestigious 71st Shogakukan Manga Award and was named Best Comic Series at Lucca Comics & Games 2024.

The story follows 29-year-old Hiroto Ikuta: jobless, unattached, and entirely without a rigid life plan. Steering clear of grand adventures, it embraces a heartfelt slice-of-life tone where neighbors and friends navigate everyday anxieties, grief, and simple human connection.

Who is Making the Anime?

The anime is directed, structured, and written by Kei Suezawa (Fate/Grand Order: Camelot, FLCL Progressive). Character designs are handled by Naoyuki Asano (Urusei Yatsura, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!), with art direction by Mika Nishimura. Animation production is led by Production +h, the studio behind The Orbital Children and Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction.

The project is a co-production between VIZ Media and Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions (ShoPro). The official teaser, released back in March 2026, carries the heartfelt tagline: "Where a house becomes a home.">

What This Means

US premiere events spearheaded by VIZ typically signal that a title is a major priority for international markets right alongside its Japanese TV debut. As of now, a concrete Japanese broadcast date and international streaming platforms have yet to be confirmed.

Tickets for the exclusive New York event are available now on the official Japan Society website.
