GPT-6 Luna reaches free ChatGPT on October 8 with interactive answers

GPT-6 Luna starts reaching the Chat tab of ChatGPT Free and Go on October 8, 2026. OpenAI opened GPT-6 Sol to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise on October 7; today's expansion puts the cheaper model on the free tier, together with Intelligent UI, which mixes text, charts, buttons and mini tools in the same answer.

What happened?

In the October 7 post GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for everyone, OpenAI says GPT-6 with Intelligent UI is rolling out globally in the Chat tab for paid plans and, starting the next day, to Free and Go. Paid plans get GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go get GPT-6 Luna. The company also says ChatGPT is used by more than 1.2 billion people each week.

Intelligent UI lets the model build an answer from native components: diagrams, charts, forms, tappable buttons and interactive experiences generated on the spot, such as a simple calculator or a bill splitter. When a short text reply is enough, ChatGPT can still answer in text only. The interface appears progressively while the model keeps generating.

OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts answering questions that need a web search about 44% sooner, on average, than GPT-5.6 Instant. That figure measures time to the start of the answer, not total completion time.

Why it matters

Until now, GPT-6 Luna on the free plan was limited to the desktop app, according to the Sol and Luna model notes. Bringing the model to the Chat tab, on the web and on mobile, changes the practical reach: most people use ChatGPT in the regular conversation, not in a separate app.

On the API, OpenAI lists GPT-6 Sol at US$2 per million input tokens and US$10 for output, and GPT-6 Luna at US$0.10 and US$0.50. The company describes those rates as 50% lower than the GPT-5.6 equivalents. GPT-6 Astra remains the highest-capability model and, on Plus, is still limited to flows such as Work and Codex, not the regular Chat tab.

What changes in practice?

  • On Free or Go, the expected Chat-tab model is GPT-6 Luna, not Sol.
  • The rollout is gradual. OpenAI says that if GPT-6 is not in the model menu, the account may not be in the queue yet.
  • Enterprise accounts depend on admin settings.
  • Answers may include buttons, charts and embedded tools; that does not replace a dedicated app and is still rolling out.
