Google Cloud announced on October 8, 2026, at Gemini at Work, the Gemini agent: an agent the company describes as universal for work. The pitch is to move beyond one-off answers and accept an objective, plan the steps and return something finished inside tools the company already uses.
Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, presented the product as a single agent and a single API for questions, knowledge work, media creation and code.
What the agent does
According to the Google Cloud blog, the Gemini agent works on the web, iOS, Android, Windows and Mac, the command line, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 and Slack. It keeps memory in the cloud, can create temporary sub-agents and coworker agents with an @agents.company.com email, and chooses between Gemini and Anthropic Claude models. It connects to Git, Jira, Salesforce, ServiceNow, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres, Snowflake and MCP servers.
Why it matters
Kurian cited production scale: nearly 500 Google Cloud customers would each have processed more than one trillion tokens in the last year, about 80% of cloud customers would use the company's AI products and nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 would use Gemini Enterprise. These are company statements, not independent audits. The Verge and TechCrunch report a private preview for enterprise customers, with no public date for the free Gemini app.
