Google’s Gemini app is retiring Gemini Gems and folding that role into skills. A notice reported by 9to5Google on September 27, 2026, says automatic migration starts on November 17, 2026.
Until each Gem is migrated, it remains usable. There is still no company blog post; the product notice is the primary source.
What changes
Gems live in the side panel. Skills are invoked with a slash in the prompt box and more than one can run in the same chat. Gems can set a default tool, attach files, and be shared by link. Public official documentation has not yet confirmed full feature parity.

Android Authority pointed to October 13, 2026 as the end of Gem creation and editing. Creating skills in Gemini Spark is currently tied to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra.
