The Gemini Gems Skills switch is already in the app: Google will retire Gemini Gems and automatically convert them into Skills starting November 17, 2026. The notice sits in the Gem manager and was confirmed by TechCrunch, Android Authority and 9to5Google.
Gems, launched in 2024, are custom Gemini assistants. You save instructions — study coach, editor, trip planner — and reopen that persona without repeating the prompt. Google shipped premade Gems and let people share their own.
What happened?
The in-app notice says that from October 13, 2026 you can no longer create or edit Gems. Existing ones keep working until migration. On November 17, Google starts turning them into Skills, including supported files. No action is required for the conversion.
Anyone who uses Gemini daily should look at the calendar now. The window to tweak an open Gem closes in two weeks. After that, the saved text becomes a Skill triggered by a slash command.
Why it matters
Skills are no longer picked from a sidebar. You type / in chat and choose one or several Skills at once. The interface looks more like developer slash commands than the visual Gem picker.
There is an open question for free accounts. Gems were available to everyone. The Skills help page, according to Android Authority and Notebookcheck, requires Google AI Pro or AI Ultra, a personal account, age 18+ and Keep Activity turned on. Google has not spelled out what free users get after November 17.
Workspace business and nonprofit accounts migrate in March 2027. Education accounts move in June 2027. Personal accounts are in the November 2026 batch.
What changes in practice
- Until October 12: create and edit Gems as usual.
- October 13: creation and editing lock.
- November 17: automatic migration to Skills.
- Usage: / in chat instead of the side panel.
- Skill export: a .zip file, according to press reports.
If you rely on a custom Gem, copy its instructions now. In tests cited by Notebookcheck on September 29, the Create skills button did nothing on free accounts in Germany and the slash menu did not open. That means the feature is not universal yet.
TechCrunch ties the Gem retirement to competition with all-in-one agents such as Meta’s Muse and Instinct. Google is folding the Gem brand into a reusable chat piece instead of keeping a separate product in navigation.
October 13 is the urgent date. After that you only consume what you already saved. On November 17 Gemini Gems Skills finishes the format swap and the old panel stops being the official path.
