Gears of War E-Day, the prequel that shows Emergence Day through Marcus Fenix's eyes, reached the general public on October 6, 2026. The game from The Coalition and Xbox Game Studios is on Xbox Series X|S, on PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store, and on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass from day one. Microsoft also offers Gears of War E-Day in the cloud through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW.
The worldwide launch was set for 8:00 a.m. Pacific Time (15:00 UTC). Premium Edition buyers, and Game Pass subscribers with the Premium upgrade, had already been playing since October 1, according to Xbox Wire.
What critics say about Gears of War E-Day
On Metacritic, the game page listed a score of 87, labeled generally favorable, based on 48 critic reviews. The aggregate was still moving on launch day. Outlets tracking the roundup also cited about 88 on OpenCritic, with roughly 92 percent of critics recommending it. If those numbers hold, Gears of War E-Day sits above Gears of War 4 and Gears 5, both at 84 on Metacritic, and behind the original trilogy (94, 93 and 91).
What went into that score matters. The review embargo lifted on October 1, but multiplayer modes — 12-player Horde Siege and Versus Ranked — were not available to critics during that period. The score therefore mainly reflects the campaign, not the full set of modes.
Why Gears of War E-Day matters
Gears of War E-Day is the first mainline game in the franchise in seven years and was rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, targeting 4K and up to 60 frames per second in campaign and multiplayer, plus ultrawide support and handheld play on devices such as Steam Deck and Xbox Ally. The prequel returns to the horror tone of Emergence Day, when the Locust Horde invaded Sera, and follows Marcus before he became the saga's icon.
The release also marks a platform decision. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said Gears of War E-Day would be an Xbox console exclusive, though it is on PC. No PlayStation version has been announced at launch. Store listings put the standard edition at a reference price of US$69.99.
