Final Fantasy VII Revelation: director promises even better graphics on Switch 2 than Rebirth

Final Fantasy VII Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi stated in a recent interview that Square Enix aims to take the graphical quality and presentation of the game on Nintendo Switch 2 to an even higher level than what was achieved with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The information comes from a conversation with Nintendo Everything, published in October 2026.

What happened?

Hamaguchi explained that the experience gained from porting Rebirth to the Switch 2 was crucial. Without that prior knowledge, developing Revelation simultaneously for the Switch 2 and other platforms would have been a much greater challenge. “I’m not sure we could achieve it if we were doing it from scratch,” the director said.

The team is satisfied with the Rebirth result on Switch 2 and wants to go further in Revelation, which is larger in scale. The idea is to elevate graphical quality and presentation to the highest possible level, using optimizations based on previous work, without letting the multiplatform nature limit the game.

Why does this matter?

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the final chapter of the Remake trilogy and arrives on April 8, 2027 for Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series and PC. Showing that the Switch 2 can deliver a high-level visual experience in a massive open-world RPG reinforces the console’s potential and can attract more franchise players.

Hamaguchi highlighted that the optimizations will be even more refined, resulting in good overall performance, even if it doesn’t mean improvements in everything on the Switch 2 in direct comparison.

What changes in practice?

Switch 2 players can expect a polished version of Revelation, benefiting from the lessons of Rebirth. The game continues to use Unreal Engine 4 and will have around 200 GB of installation on the more powerful platforms. The multiplatform approach from the start helps reduce the quality gap between consoles.
