Final Fantasy Resonance receives 36/40 from Famitsu before October 22 launch

What happened?

Japanese magazine Famitsu published the first review of Final Fantasy Resonance, giving it a score of 36/40. All four reviewers gave 9/10 each, resulting in a unanimous and strong rating just before launch.

The game Final Fantasy Resonance, developed by Square Enix and Lancarse, is the first mainline Final Fantasy title to use the HD-2D style (pixel art mixed with 3D), popularized by Octopath Traveler. It launches on October 22, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 and PC (Steam).

Why is this important?

The high Famitsu score is a positive signal for a game that returns classic series elements — crystals, jobs, summons, airships and iconic characters like Cloud and Tidus — in a modern turn-based combat system with the Visions system and Resonance attacks. The main campaign is about 20-30 hours, and full completion can reach 70 hours.

As the first official review, the score builds anticipation, although Western magazine scores have not yet come out. A demo is available with save transfer.

What changes in practice?

Players can expect a turn-based RPG faithful to the essence of Final Fantasy with a modern nostalgic visual. The multiplatform launch, including Switch 2, expands the reach. Source: Famitsu via reports in Nintendo Life, HappyGamer and others.
