Factorio 2.1 Stable: Final Update Brings Quality of Life Improvements and Space Logistics

What happened?

Wube Software announced on Friday, October 23, 2026, that Factorio 2.1 has been promoted to stable. The Factorio 2.1 update marks the end of active content development for the automation game, exactly two years after the Space Age expansion release. According to the official Friday Facts #449 blog, Factorio 2.1 gathers quality of life improvements, small features, and polish that the team wanted to include in 2.0 but didn't have time for. See the full announcement at factorio.com.

There are no new planets, enemies, or research trees. Instead, the focus is on refinements that make the experience smoother in both the base game and Space Age. The classic trailer was also updated one last time.

Why does this matter?

Factorio is one of the highest-rated simulation games in Steam history, known for its depth in factory automation. Factorio 2.1 represents the closing of an era of continuous expansion. From now on, Wube is expected to focus only on bug fixes, compatibility, and mod support while prototyping new projects.

For those who stayed on the stable 2.0 version, the Factorio 2.1 update brings dozens of practical changes. Among them, significant improvements to space logistics, the heart of Space Age.

What changes in practice?

The main novelties of Factorio 2.1 include:

  • Space logistics: rockets can now carry different items in the same launch; platforms can transfer items between each other; it is possible to import from any location by leaving the slot blank.
  • Platform balancing: asteroid damage depends on remaining health, not speed; the hub has more resistance; drag is based on mass, not just width.
  • Circuit network: reading and writing can be separated by wire colors; labs, boilers, and heat exchangers can be controlled by circuits; mines can serve as sensors.
  • Quality: Space Age can be played without the Quality system (now an optional dependency); higher quality locomotives and wagons are faster and larger.
  • Graphics and others: new sprites for assembling machines, refinery, and silo; native ARM64 Linux support; ability to flip pumpjacks and miners.

2.0 saves load, but some changes (such as the input/output separation in circuits) may break existing designs. Blueprints and saves cannot be downgraded to 2.0. The team recommends backups.

The Factorio 2.1 update is available for free to all owners of the game and expansion on Steam and official platforms.
