Epic Mickey: Rebrushed arrives on Switch 2 on October 6 with a free upgrade

Epic Mickey: Rebrushed arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 6, 2026 in most regions, and owners of the original Switch version do not need to buy it again. THQ Nordic confirms in an official FAQ that the Switch 2 upgrade is free for both digital and cartridge owners.

How the upgrade works

The path described by the publisher is to install the Switch 1 version on a Switch 2 and then download the upgrade patch. On physical copies, the player inserts the Switch cartridge into the Switch 2, installs the game and any owned DLC, and applies the free patch. On digital copies, they download the Switch 1 version on the new console and do the same. Nintendo Life published the FAQ on September 22; outlets such as NintendoReporters revisited the launch details on October 4, two days before release.

There is a save caveat. FAQ reports say progress only carries over if the player moves Switch 1 save data to the Switch 2 and then applies the patch. A standalone purchase of the native Switch 2 edition would not automatically read saves from the old version. The upgraded install and the separately sold product are treated as distinct items on the console.

What changes on Switch 2

The Switch 2 edition of Epic Mickey: Rebrushed raises resolution and frame rate, without the previous generation's quality and performance toggle, and adds mouse-style controls with Joy-Con 2. The Costume Pack comes with the standalone Switch 2 edition; on the upgrade, the DLC only appears if it was already bought and installed on Switch 1.

The Switch 2 physical release is a Game Key Card, not a full cartridge. The listed price is US$ 39.99, € 39.99 or £ 34.99, with no pre-order. In Japan, the published window is October 8 at midnight local time. In most regions, the cited date is October 6.

Why it matters

Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is the remake of Epic Mickey, the Disney game in which the mouse paints and erases the world with paint and thinner. A free upgrade lowers the friction of moving a Switch library to Switch 2. The Game Key Card model still requires a download even from the physical box.
