Square Enix announced on Wednesday (16) that the Dragon Quest franchise has officially surpassed 100 million units in combined physical shipments and digital sales. This major milestone arrives just as the iconic RPG series approaches four decades since the launch of the original game on the Famicom on May 27, 1986.

What happened?
The official figure includes physical copies shipped to retailers and digital downloads tracked since April 2015, covering both packaged game digital versions and digital-only releases for consoles and PC. Back in February, the franchise stood just above 97 million. Just seven months later, it has officially crossed the 100 million threshold.
The announcement was shared on the official series website and the @DQ_PR X account, accompanied by a special video message from franchise creator Yuji Horii.
What Horii had to say
In his message to fans, Horii expressed gratitude to players and the development team, recalling that 40 years ago when the first game launched, he never imagined it would come this far. "I am deeply moved," he wrote on X. In the official video, he promised to keep delivering grand adventures and asked for continued support for upcoming releases like Dragon Quest Monsters 4: Bianca and Flora of the Barren Land, scheduled for release on December 3, 2026, with a playable demo already available.
Why this matters
Hitting 100 million units places Dragon Quest into an elite tier of Japanese RPG franchises that have successfully spanned generations without abandoning the classic hero-versus-dark-lord formula. The iconic slime designed by Akira Toriyama and Koichi Sugiyama's legendary musical scores have become profound cultural symbols in Japan on par with their massive sales numbers.
This milestone is about much more than pure nostalgia. Square Enix continues to invest heavily in HD-2D remakes, spin-offs, and the highly anticipated mainline installment, Dragon Quest XII: Beyond the Dream. Reaching 100 million in its 40th anniversary year provides strong commercial validation to keep the core series thriving for years to come.
What this does not reveal
The company did not break down sales figures for individual titles or specify what percentage came from mobile hits like Dragon Quest Walk. Furthermore, no new release date for DQ XII was provided in this announcement. The record represents the cumulative success of the franchise as a whole rather than a single standalone game.
