DeepSeek V4.1-Flash-1017: Chinese Model Gets Faster and More Efficient with Better Benchmarks

Chinese startup DeepSeek launched DeepSeek V4.1-Flash-1017, an update to the Flash model that promises better benchmark performance, faster task completion and shorter outputs while keeping low costs.

What happened?

Announced on October 17, 2026, the model is available on DeepSeek's website, app and API. According to the company, there are improvements in reasoning, coding, agentic tasks and visual benchmarks. On DeepSWE v1.1, the score rose to 77.0 (from 74.2), and on Terminal-Bench 4.0 to 42.3 (from 31.2). The company also opened its Search & Fetch APIs to developers.

The model is a minor update to the September V4.1-Flash, with a 552B backbone MoE architecture and multimodal support. Previous weights are available under MIT license on Hugging Face.

Why is this important?

DeepSeek continues to pressure proprietary US models from OpenAI and Anthropic with cheaper and more efficient open-weight alternatives. The Pareto improvement in performance versus cost reinforces the competitiveness of Chinese AI, especially in coding and building projects from scratch, including games and 3D modeling.

What changes in practice?

Developers can use the model via API with the ID deepseek-flash, at low token costs. Opening Search APIs allows web search integration in agents. The model is optimized for tools like DeepSeek Harness. Official sources include DeepSeek's blog and X posts, plus technical reports on Hugging Face.
