Dead of the Brain, FairyTale’s 1992 PC-98 zombie adventure, now has a Steam page and a release date: October 30, 2026, in time for Halloween. Fakku is publishing it after taking the publishing rights to the Japanese studio’s catalog. Automaton reports this is the first official English release.
The store page is app 5056390. The PC version is set to keep the original pixel art, upscaled for HD displays, and the unaltered FM soundtrack. Fakku also plans the score as DLC. Optional quality-of-life features include more forgiving checkpoints and hints when hovering over clickable areas. A Steam disclaimer cited by Automaton says the 1992 experience remains largely intact.
What the game is
Dead of the Brain was FairyTale’s first horror title. The studio had mostly made adult games before that. Character designs are by Ryuichi Makino, also linked to anime such as Wandering Son and Re:Creators. Automaton and PC Gamer describe it as a nod to 1980s splatter films: protagonist Cole watches scientist Dr. Cooger test a serum that brings the dead back, and the side effect is a zombie outbreak.
The structure is a period Japanese adventure, with visual-novel dialogue and sections that use look, use and get commands. There are also timed events against on-screen threats. PC Gamer notes a fan translation by the group WINE and treats the official release as a rare stamp on community work. The report does not confirm that the Steam English text reuses that translation.
What is still open
A Game*Spark note on October 7 described the date as unset when the page first appeared. Automaton, dated October 8 in Japan, points to October 30 based on the Steam page. As of this article, specialized outlets cite October 30; price and the final feature list were not detailed in the reporting used here.
Fakku has also signaled English versions of Dead of the Brain 2 and other horror titles from the studio. Those follow-ups do not yet have public pages or dates. There is no console announcement.
