Cursor launches voice chat with coding agents: talk and the agent codes

Cursor launched Voice Chat with Agents on November 6, 2026, a feature that lets developers talk to their coding agent in real time. Instead of typing instructions, you describe the change out loud, and the agent does the work while the conversation continues.

It works in the Agents Window, the IDE, on the web, and in the Cursor app for iOS. To start, click the waveform button labeled “Start voice chat”, which appears where Send usually sits when the agent is idle and the chat input is empty. In the IDE, the chat needs at least one message first.

What the voice agent does during a call

During a call, the voice agent listens, replies, and hands coding work to the coding agent in that chat. While the work runs, you can ask what changed in a diff, check on a run, search earlier messages and calls with the same agent, and even switch workers in a Project. The coding agent speaks short progress notes while it works and a brief answer when it finishes.

Voice is handled by Grok Voice, with several voices to choose from, including Ara, Eve, Leo, Rex, and Sal. With Privacy Mode on, voice chat runs with zero data retention.

How it differs from dictation — and its limits

Voice chat is not dictation: dictation only turns speech into text in the chat input, while voice chat is a two-way conversation in which the agent answers out loud. On iOS, you can also start a call by saying “Hey Siri, call Cursor”. There is a daily limit on voice calls, and a call ends after about 10 minutes of silence. Using the feature requires a signed-in Cursor account; sessions authenticated only with an API key cannot start a voice chat.

The launch comes in the same week Cursor introduced Live Apps, underlining the company's bet on agents that work in parallel, inside and outside the editor.

In market terms, voice is the natural next step for coding agents: speaking is usually faster than typing, and following the work by audio lets you program away from the keyboard. Cursor is competing in this space with other AI coding tools betting on increasingly autonomous agents, and voice chat brings the editor closer to that race.
