CIQ launches Stratum Kubernetes Engine, open Kubernetes for the AI era

CIQ, the company behind Rocky Linux, announced on Thursday, October 29, 2026, CIQ Stratum Kubernetes Engine (SKE), an open-source Kubernetes built for the AI era. According to the announcement, Kubernetes already runs in production at 82% of organizations that use containers, but assembling it still means combining about ten upstream projects, each on its own release schedule — and that integration work is what SKE promises to simplify.

SKE ships those components as a single signed file that installs, joins, and upgrades the cluster. Built from unmodified upstream source, it runs alongside existing Linux, HPC, and GPU infrastructure, without requiring a vendor's own node operating system: it works on any Enterprise Linux 9 or later distribution, including Rocky Linux, on amd64 and arm64.

One highlight is the built-in MCP server, which lets AI agents work with the cluster under rules set by the operator. Its 37 tools are organized into read, write, and destructive tiers, and tools above the enabled tier are never registered. Kubernetes access controls still apply to every call, and secrets stay out of reach. An AGENTS.md file guides agent-driven installs, and the documentation is also published in llms.txt format. Operators also get a built-in web dashboard with pods, logs, and shell access.

For day-to-day operations, SKE pins and tests every component as a set. Rolling upgrades check each node's health and roll back a node that fails; etcd snapshots run every 12 hours by default, and certificates renew before they expire. Every release is signed and ships a software bill of materials (SBOM).

SKE is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 license and manages a single cluster with an included web UI. The commercial version, Stratum Pro, manages every SKE cluster — from GPU clusters to the general fleet — through the same interface, with single sign-on, an app catalog, an optional CIS hardening profile, and support from CIQ. The launch is in technical preview, with general availability expected on November 5, 2026, when Stratum Pro pricing will also be announced. The company will be at booth 326 at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America, November 9 to 12, in Salt Lake City.
