Black Clover season 2 reached TV and streaming this weekend, five years after the first run ended. Episode 171, The Battle Begins (Kaisen), premiered in Japan on October 3, 2026 at 11 p.m. on TV Tokyo and affiliates. On Crunchyroll, subtitled Black Clover season 2 became available from 8 a.m. PT the same day.
What happened?
The first adaptation, directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara at Studio Pierrot, aired from October 2017 to March 2021 and ran for 170 episodes. The film Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King opened in Japan in March 2023. Crunchyroll announced Black Clover season 2 at Anime Expo in July 2025, showed a trailer at Jump Festa 26 and a new preview, including the opening, at Anime Expo 2026.
Ayataka Tanemura directs the season at the same studio. Series composition is by Keiichiro Ochi and character design by Itsuko Takeda. Music is by Minako Seki. The opening is Kienai Riyu by Wanima, and the ending is Yellow Brick Road by One or Eight. Industry listings point to 24 episodes.
The first episode picks up after the Spade Kingdom raid. Asta and Liebe train with Nacht in Devil Union mode, days before the Qliphoth Gate opens. It is not a reboot: the story continues after episode 170.
Why it matters
Black Clover went years without a new weekly episode even while Yuki Tabata’s manga was still running. The manga began in Weekly Shonen Jump in February 2015, moved to Jump Giga in December 2023 and ended serialization in May 2026, with 38 collected volumes in Japan. Black Clover season 2 therefore arrives with the manga already finished.
Crunchyroll lists the episode for North and South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, the CIS, the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. The original cast returns, with Gakuto Kajiwara as Asta and Nobunaga Shimazaki as Yuno.
What changes in practice?
- New weekly episodes of Black Clover season 2 from October 3, at 11 p.m. in Japan.
- Subtitles on Crunchyroll the same weekend as the Japanese premiere.
- Direction by Ayataka Tanemura, who also handled late first-season episodes and the film.
- The story continues toward the Wizard King, now with a completed manga.
