BioWare closure: EA cancels next Mass Effect after 31 years

The BioWare closure was announced by Electronic Arts. The legendary studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age is closing its doors after more than 31 years of history. Early development of the next Mass Effect game has also ended.

What happened in the BioWare closure?

BioWare confirmed on social media that the studio is closing and that development of the next Mass Effect project is ending. The company thanked players for being "the most important part of the story" over three decades, citing titles such as Baldur's Gate, Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect.

According to reports, EA is cutting about 400 jobs, roughly 3% of its workforce, with about 50 positions at BioWare. The closure comes months after EA's acquisition by a group led by Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund.

Why it matters

BioWare pioneered narrative RPGs with meaningful choices. The cancellation of the new Mass Effect leaves fans without a game continuation of the franchise, although an Amazon TV series remains in development. The decision reflects EA's restructuring to focus on larger franchises such as EA Sports FC, Apex Legends, and Marvel and Star Wars projects.
