AMD announced on Monday a definitive agreement to acquire World Labs, the AI lab founded by researcher Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock transaction valued at about $8.2 billion. AMD’s official release and World Labs’ own blog confirm the figure and the timeline.
What happened?
San Francisco-based World Labs builds spatial-intelligence models that generate, reconstruct and simulate interactive 3D environments from text, image and video, plus tools for robotic learning and simulation. Its 2025 commercial product Marble lets users create interactive 3D worlds from a prompt.
After closing, expected by the end of 2026 subject to regulatory approvals, Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to CEO Lisa Su. Justin Johnson and Ben Mildenhall will keep leading the World Labs team inside AMD, the startup said.
Why it matters
AMD wants to design hardware, software and systems around emerging models, not only chatbots. Li has long argued that general intelligence needs grounding in the physical world. Reuters and TechCrunch note that synthetic data from world models is seen as key for general-purpose robots given the shortage of useful real-world data.
The companies already had an inference-and-training partnership. World Labs says it began training models on AMD GPUs last year. The startup raised $1 billion this year; press reports list AMD, Autodesk, Emerson Collective, Fidelity, NVIDIA and Sea among investors.
What is still unclear
The deal needs regulators. There is no public headcount figure or immediate commercial plan for Marble. AMD frames the move as strengthening an open AI stack spanning hardware, software, platforms and models.
