The AMD FSR 4.1 Xbox technology (FidelityFX Super Resolution Upscaling 4.1) is expanding to more platforms. In a joint announcement with Xbox on October 20, 2026, the machine-learning upscaling technology is coming to Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, ROG Xbox Ally handhelds and Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards.
What happened?
Jack Huynh, AMD senior vice president, and Scott Van Vliet, Xbox CTO, confirmed the expansion of AMD FSR 4.1. FSR 4.1 is already available for Radeon RX 6000 GPUs via the Adrenalin 26.10.1 driver. On Xbox Series X|S consoles it is arriving "soon", while support on Z2 Extreme and Z2A handhelds (such as the ROG Xbox Ally) starts now. It also covers Ryzen AI Max and Ryzen AI 9 laptops.
The technology uses machine learning to reconstruct high-quality images from lower-resolution rendered frames, with gains in visual quality and performance over FSR 3.1. It includes upscaling, frame generation and ray reconstruction.
Why does this matter?
Xbox Series X|S gains a modern alternative to Sony’s upscaling technologies (PSSR on PS5 Pro and QSSR on base PS5). This extends the useful life of current consoles and especially benefits the Series S and handhelds with more limited hardware. The AMD-Xbox partnership of more than two decades continues, and the next generation (Project Helix) will use FSR Diamond.
Developers will need to update their games to take advantage of FSR 4.1; it is not an automatic system switch.
What changes in practice?
- Better image quality and performance in games that adopt the AMD FSR 4.1 technology.
- Handhelds and Series S should see the biggest benefit.
- Vulkan support is also arriving, expanding reach.
- No exact date yet for Xbox Series consoles, only "coming soon".
