What happened?
AMD has officially announced the expansion of its machine-learning based upscaling technology AMD FSR 4.1 to the Xbox Series X/S and a much broader range of devices. Support now arrives for Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards (from the 6400 series up to the 6950 XT), Ryzen AI Max and Ryzen AI 9 processors, handhelds with Ryzen Z2 Extreme and Z2 A (including the ROG Xbox Ally), and soon for the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles.
The announcement was made by Jack Huynh, AMD Senior Vice President, on October 20, 2026, with statements from Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet. The technology was already available on RX 9000 cards and reached RX 7000 in July; support for RX 6000, originally planned for early 2027, has been brought forward and is already available via the Adrenalin 26.10.1 driver. AMD says the model was optimized for INT8 to run on RDNA 2 hardware.
Why does it matter?
AMD FSR 4.1 is AMD’s first true machine-learning upscaler, delivering better image quality than previous FSR versions along with frame generation and ray reconstruction. Bringing it to 2020-era RDNA 2 hardware and to Xbox consoles means millions of players can gain performance and visual quality in titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, Battlefield 6 and Assassin’s Creed Shadows without buying new hardware. This brings the Xbox experience closer to what is already available on PlayStation 5 with QSSR and on PC with recent DLSS and FSR.
On Xbox the feature will arrive “very soon” as a developer tool, and the next-generation Project Helix console already has a commitment to the future FSR Diamond. AMD also confirmed that FSR 4.1 will reach Vulkan games in the coming weeks via SDK 2.4. More details in the official AMD announcement.
What changes in practice?
RX 6000 owners can update their Adrenalin 26.10.1 driver now and enable AMD FSR 4.1 in more than 300 supported games. On Xbox Ally handhelds the benefit is immediate. On Series X/S the improvement will appear game-by-game as developers implement the tool. The INT8 optimization allows the technology to run on older hardware, with a small performance cost compared with RX 9000 cards, but still better than FSR 3.1 in visual quality. For PC and Xbox players this represents a free upscaling upgrade for existing and future games.
- RX 6000: available now via driver
- Z2 / Xbox Ally handhelds: available now
- Xbox Series X/S: coming soon for developers
- Vulkan: in the coming weeks
