Ace Combat 8 takes off with crossplay and series-best scores in Wings of Theve

Ace Combat 8 launched on October 2, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, seven years after Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. The new Ace Combat 8, titled Wings of Theve, arrives with the series' first crossplay multiplayer and scores that, according to TechTimes, reached 87 on PS5 Metacritic, 90 on Xbox Series X and 86 on PC, with an OpenCritic aggregate of 88.

What happened?

Bandai Namco confirmed the global launch of Ace Combat 8, the series' 30th-anniversary entry. In Japan, 4Gamer logged the same-day release: the protagonist takes the legendary name "Wings of Theve" and tries to reclaim the homeland with three new allies. The studio uses its own Cloudly engine to draw wide skies and multi-layer clouds.

The Deluxe Edition had early access from September 29. The standard Ace Combat 8 opened on October 1 at 6 p.m. US Eastern Time, according to TechTimes, and Bandai Namco's official store already lists the title as available.

Why it matters

Ace Combat 8 is the first game in the series in which PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC pilots share a match. ACE COMBAT ONLINE has progression and saves separate from the campaign. The official site describes an air base for up to 100 players and two cooperative cores: Co-Op Assault, with two teams of four competing for score against enemies, and Co-Op Warfare.

TechTimes also notes fighter, attacker, multirole and electronic-warfare classes, Emergency Sortie missions for up to eight players against historical franchise superweapons, and limited PvP formats such as 4v4 and eight-player free-for-all. There is also a seasonal Premium Ace Pass, a first for the series. Online reception, according to the same report, has been more measured than the campaign's.

What changes in practice

Anyone playing Ace Combat 8 on console or PC can form a squadron without matching platforms. The campaign keeps the series' arcade tone: Metro scored it 9/10 and called it the best combat flight sim ever made for consoles, praising mission variety and graphics while criticizing too much story. Reviews are not unanimous: Wand Report, on a pre-launch build, scored it 7/10 and saw little break from the predecessor.

The launch lands in a crowded October, next to titles such as Star Wars: Galactic Racer and the PS5 QSSR update. Ace Combat 8 does not depend on that upscaler: the announced gain is crossplay and the Cloudly engine.
