Ace Combat 8 takes off today on PS5, Xbox and PC with Wings of Theve

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve takes off this Friday, October 2, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. It is the first mainline entry in the aerial shooter series in seven years and, according to Bandai Namco in Japan, the franchise’s 30th-anniversary title.

What happened?

Bandai Namco Entertainment America confirmed the worldwide release of Ace Combat 8 for October 2, after Deluxe Edition early access that began on September 28. Development is by Bandai Namco Aces. Ace Combat 8 uses Unreal Engine 5 and the studio’s own technology for fighters, terrain and sky. 4Gamer highlights the Cloudly engine, used to render wide skies and multi-layer clouds.

The campaign stays inside the series’ fictional universe. The Federation of Central Usea (FCU) is occupied by the Republic of Sotoa. The player becomes the ace known as Wings of Theve, named after the FCU capital, and flies with Baxter, Tasha and Coster in Joker Flight. Story scenes are first-person. Ahead of launch, Bandai Namco released the live-action prequel Hour Zero, starring Josh Holloway, Brandon Routh and Tamlyn Tomita.

Ace Combat 8 multiplayer is the largest in the series, with cross-play. Pilots customize a mercenary and enter the Air Base, a hub for up to 100 players. Modes cited by the publisher are Co-Op Assault and Co-Op Warfare, plus limited-time emergency missions and PvP events. There is progression, training and a Premium Ace Pass sold separately and included with Deluxe for one season, with skins and the ADFX-02 Morgan — Pixy aircraft.

Why it matters

Ace Combat 7 launched in 2019. Seven years later, Ace Combat 8 returns with next-gen graphics and weather that changes combat, not just the backdrop. Early reviews split on the story and agree on the flying. Metro scored it 9/10 and called it the best combat flight sim yet made for consoles, while finding the story too long. TechRadar praised the combat and the clouds and criticized the cutscenes and ending. The Wand Report scored it 7/10 and noted that the core remains familiar.

On October’s crowded calendar, Ace Combat 8 lands four days before Gears of War: E-Day, another Unreal Engine 5 release. They are different games — arcade air combat versus cover shooting — but they share the same weekend window.

What changes in practice

Deluxe owners of Ace Combat 8 have already been flying since early access. For everyone else, the game is on sale today on all three platforms. It can be played as arcade action or with more simulation. Online play needs a connection, and the seasonal pass is an extra purchase if a player wants Ace Pass rewards. The campaign itself does not require the pass.
