Zelda Link's Awakening Claude port: public beta of native AI-built PC port arrives

An unofficial native port of the 2019 Nintendo Switch remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening has reached public beta on GitHub. The LASRecomp project, a Zelda Link's Awakening Claude port, was developed almost exclusively with help from Anthropic's Claude and is described as the first fully playable Switch game port via static recompilation.

What happened?

Developer peiikai stated that Claude Code handled reverse engineering, most of the coding, and even the repository documentation. The Zelda Link's Awakening Claude port runs natively on Windows, macOS, and Linux (with an experimental Arm Linux build) and requires players to provide their own original game files, as it does not include Nintendo proprietary assets.

Extra PC features

Beyond multiplatform compatibility, the port adds ultrawide resolution support, customizable controls (including keyboard and mouse), an overlay menu, and a Randomizer that lets users alter dungeon layouts and item placements. There is also mention of MetalFX upscaling on macOS.

Why it matters

This Zelda Link's Awakening Claude port marks a milestone in the wave of "vibe coding" and AI-assisted recompilations that have exploded in recent months. While most earlier ports targeted 20-30-year-old games, this one reaches a relatively modern Switch title. Early footage of work on Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario Bros. Wonder is already circulating. The community is debating the merits and risks (including potential legal action from Nintendo), while heavy AI use accelerates projects that previously took years.

The repository is available on GitHub for those who want to try it, with the usual caveat that it is an unauthorized fan-made project.
