Yuji Horii AI: Dragon Quest Creator Makes Detective Game in 30 Minutes with Claude

Yuji Horii AI is the new chapter from the Dragon Quest creator: he launched a browser interrogation game that he says was made in about 30 minutes using artificial intelligence.

What happened?

On October 11, 2026, Yuji Horii posted on X the link to “Interrogation Room Komiya” (取調室の小宮), a text game in which the player interrogates a 72-year-old suspect — the same age as Horii — about a pawnshop robbery. The game runs as an Anthropic Claude Artifact.

Horii compared the process to creating The Portopia Serial Murder Case in 1983, when he wrote the story, drew the pictures and programmed it alone. Now, he says, it is enough to give instructions to the AI to produce “a decent game” even without knowing how to draw or program. He called the experience “truly astonishing” and warned not to press the boost button.

Why does this matter?

The demonstration shows how generative AI tools allow experienced designers to prototype playable games in minutes. Horii had already defended the use of AI chatbots in mystery games and Square Enix tested Gemini in Dragon Quest X. The post reached millions of views and generated debate about the impact on game production.

What changes in practice?

The game is short, free and entirely in Japanese: the player chooses lines of questioning, manages agitation and resistance meters and tries to extract a confession before the lawyer arrives. It does not replace a full commercial RPG, but it illustrates the drop in the entry barrier for solo prototyping.
