Microsoft announced the creation of Xbox Labs, a new internal group within the Xbox division focused on exploring emerging technologies, including the use of artificial intelligence to decompile, recompile, and port games to different platforms.
What happened?
In a message sent to Xbox employees on October 13, 2026, and published on Xbox Wire, CEO Asha Sharma detailed the project. She highlighted how, in recent weeks, games have been rapidly decompiled and rebuilt to run on hardware they were never originally designed for, such as Windows PC builds translated to Apple Silicon or ported to browsers via WebAssembly and WebGPU (supported in about 90% of browsers).
Sharma also noted that many of the world's biggest games have had their code remixed into that of other titles. To explore these possibilities, she asked Scott Van Vliet, Xbox CTO, to stand up Xbox Labs: a small group of game makers, engineers, and scientists whose mission is to turn emerging ideas into experiences for players and developers.
Why it matters
The initiative acknowledges the recent boom in AI-accelerated decompilation projects that enable ports to new platforms and creative mashups, such as mechanics from one game integrated into another. Sharma stated that these experiments challenge long-held industry assumptions, such as the tether between software and hardware, the boundary between creation and play, and how people discover and experience games.
She emphasized that giving old games new life, making great games easier to access, and allowing more players to become creators are positive outcomes, even when (and sometimes because) they challenge existing business models. The group will build in the open, learn from what people do, and measure success by whether more people are playing and creating. Tools developed will be shared with developers across the industry.
Xbox priorities are not changing: commitment to great games, hardware, and responsible stewardship of IP and communities. Labs provides a way to explore new technology without abandoning the work already underway.
