Xbox Labs: Microsoft creates group to explore AI-powered ports, decompilations and remixes

Microsoft announced the creation of Xbox Labs, a new internal group led by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, to turn emerging ideas into concrete experiences for players and developers.

What is Xbox Labs?

In a memo sent to the team on October 13, 2026, and published on Xbox Wire, Sharma explained that Labs is a small team of game makers, engineers and scientists, led by CTO Scott Van Vliet. The goal is to "build in the open, learn from what people do, and measure success by whether more people are playing and creating."

The initiative responds to the recent wave of AI-accelerated decompilations and recompilations that allowed games to run on hardware they were never designed for — such as ports to Apple Silicon, browser versions via WebAssembly and WebGPU, and even remixes of major franchises into other games' source code.

Why it matters

Sharma highlighted that these experiments challenge industry assumptions about the tether between software and hardware, the boundary between creation and play, and how people discover and experience games. Labs does not change Xbox's current priorities (the 4Cs, hardware and IP stewardship), but provides a space to explore technologies without abandoning ongoing work.

The company plans to share the tools developed with the industry, following Xbox's history of releasing technologies like DirectX and Game Pass.

What changes in practice

Players can expect greater accessibility for classic games, support for modders, and experiments with new distribution formats such as browser and Apple Silicon. The site labs.xbox.com is already live for updates.
