Xbox will publish PHYSINT, Hideo Kojima's upcoming action-espionage game. PlayStation announced it is stepping away from the partnership, and the Metal Gear Solid creator confirmed that Sony went as far as communicating the project's cancellation in June 2026.

What Happened?
On the night of September 9, 2026, PlayStation released a statement saying that, after careful consideration, it decided to step back from its collaboration with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT. Almost simultaneously, Xbox Wire confirmed that its partnership with Kojima's studio is expanding: alongside OD, Microsoft will now also publish PHYSINT.
Kojima was more direct. In a message on X, he stated that in mid-June, PlayStation Studios unexpectedly gave notice that it would cancel the project. According to the director, PHYSINT is crucial to him and the studio. As a result, the team spent three months looking for a new partner and chose Xbox because they share a vision for the future.
What is PHYSINT?
PHYSINT marks Kojima's return to the action-espionage genre that made him famous. The game was announced in 2024, still tied to PlayStation, and received official artwork and a cast reveal during KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS' 10th-anniversary event in 2025. Among the names mentioned are Don Lee, Charlee Fraser, and Minami Hamabe.
No release date or confirmed platforms were shared in Wednesday's announcement. The major change is who is backing and publishing the title.
What Does This Mean?
For players, switching publishers is not just a minor contract detail. Whoever publishes a game typically dictates the budget, release window, and often, which consoles it launches on. OD, Kojima's other project with Xbox, is treated as a platform-exclusive title. PHYSINT could follow a similar path, though this has not been explicitly stated yet.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma stated that creators deserve a choice in where to realize their ideas and that Microsoft is honored to work with Kojima on PHYSINT. Kojima, in turn, said the studio remains committed to redefining the action-espionage genre.
The Xbox announcement also mentions collaborating in film and television, beyond gaming.
Why Is This Important?
Kojima spent years closely associated with PlayStation, from Metal Gear to Death Stranding. Seeing Sony pull out of a project announced on its own stage and Xbox step in instead sends a clear message about the market: top creators are not locked to a single platform, and an internal cancellation doesn't have to kill a game if another publisher is willing to take the risk.
For fans, the good news is that development continues. Kojima asked the public to rest easy: PHYSINT is still in production.
What This Doesn't Mean Yet
It cannot be stated yet whether PHYSINT will be an Xbox exclusive, land on Game Pass on day one, or if PlayStation has severed all future ties with Kojima. Sony itself stated that it continues to admire the director's vision and that their relationship remains strong. These are standard corporate statements. The concrete fact is simple: on this project, the publisher is now Xbox.
