WARDOGS Launches on Steam with 337K Players and Massive Queues

Bulkhead's tactical FPS WARDOGS entered Steam Early Access this Thursday (10) with the kind of launch the market only sees once in a blue moon: a peak of over 337,000 concurrent players, the number one spot on the top sellers list—and a queue so huge it instantly became a meme.

What happened?

WARDOGS arrived on PC for around $40 and, within hours, surpassed 300,000 people online at the same time. Launch reports mentioned queues with over 300,000 players ahead. The developer attributed part of the bottleneck to a rate limit on Valve's side, an issue that hadn't appeared in the previous beta.

Later, Bulkhead released a hotfix: players who were logged in had to close the client, download the patch, and rejoin the queue. Access shifted to controlled batches to prevent the servers from crashing again. According to SteamDB, the peak hit 337,157 concurrent players.

What is the game?

WARDOGS is a military FPS featuring up to 100 players split into three teams, battling over control zones that change every match. The gameplay aims for a slower, more tactical pace than Call of Duty, reminiscent of what many associate with classic Battlefield. Japan's 4Gamer highlighted the launch trailer and the promise of console versions in 2028.

It is not a battle royale. You drop in with a squad, contest objectives on the map, and need to factor in positioning, ammunition, and timing—not just pure reflexes. That's why the Battlefield comparison keeps popping up: it fills the exact void players have been feeling in the genre in 2026.

Why does this matter?

In a year where the live-service multiplayer market feels shaky, a brand-new title without a massive franchise backing it reaching the top of Steam on day one is rare. The numbers show a huge appetite for a large-scale map shooter. At the same time, the queue chaos reminds us that peak success and infrastructure are two different conversations: selling a lot doesn't guarantee you can actually play.

Bulkhead itself, in a statement on Steam News, issued an apology and promised to monitor the situation overnight. GameSpot and PC Gamer closely tracked the server ups and downs throughout the day.

In practice

If you bought WARDOGS, close the game to pick up the hotfix and wait out the queue. Quitting halfway through sends you right back to the end of the line. Consoles are slated for 2028; for now, it's PC only. Early Access will continue tweaking progression and rewards—the developer has already warned that major items will require some grind.

For those just watching from the sidelines: the 337k peak on Steam is a clear statement. If Bulkhead manages to stabilize the servers, the game will be a serious contender in the 2026 tactical FPS arena. If not, it risks becoming just another launch that ruined its first impression.
