Valve has started the beta of Achievement Sets on Steam, a new feature that allows grouping game achievements into separate sets for the base game and DLCs, preserving 100% status even with new content.
What happened?
In the official Steam announcement, Valve explained that games today "live longer than ever, continuing to receive updates through new DLC, expansions, and seasons", but achievements added with new content "can be hard to discover and can accidentally break the completion status of players who have already finished the game".
Developers can create specific sets, such as single-player and multiplayer, or class-based sets. Each set has its own progress bar, and completing one adds a "set complete" trophy to the profile. If new achievements are added later, completion is preserved.
Types of sets and features
There are two types: Base Game sets (blue) for achievements available to all, and DLC sets (purple) that only count after purchasing additional content. Developers can also archive achievements or entire sets for seasonal or temporary events.
The achievements page has been updated, with filters, comparison with up to three friends, and the Perfect Games tab renamed to Completed. Games already with support include Against the Storm, Age of Wonders 4, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Crusader Kings 3, Dredge, Portal 2, Team Fortress 2 and others.
Why it matters
For completionists, this solves a common problem in live-service games and those with frequent DLCs. The Achievement Sets on Steam beta is available in the client and for developers. Source: official Steam announcement and Eurogamer coverage.
