Valve has publicly mentioned the codename HLX for the first time in an explicit way, reigniting speculation about a possible Half-Life 3. Audio and music designer Mike Morasky named the Valve HLX Half-Life 3 during a panel at GameSoundCon 2026 in Burbank, California.
What happened?
In the panel “Valve’s Approach to an Open and Flexible Audio Engine,” Morasky was discussing HDR (High Dynamic Range) audio systems. He stated: “In fact, Deadlock has its own version of HDR, HLX has its own version, and so on and so forth.”
Sitting next to him, sound designer David Feise immediately reacted by whispering something like “nice work” and later remarked that Morasky had only said HLX once. The reaction suggests the mention was not planned for the public. The panel video is available on Vimeo and was quickly shared by fans and dataminers.
HLX is a codename that has appeared in Valve game files, such as Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2 and Deadlock, since at least early 2024. Dataminers and insiders have linked the project to a new Half-Life title, possibly non-VR, unlike Half-Life: Alyx (released in 2020). Elements like ray tracing support and Combine enemy systems have been tracked in these files.
Why it matters
Half-Life 3 is one of the most anticipated games in history. Insider reports from Tyler McVicker indicate that a Half-Life project was in advanced development, with end-to-end playable versions last year. A public mention by a veteran Valve developer is the most direct confirmation so far that something called HLX exists internally.
McVicker has also analyzed recent Source 2 engine updates that may relate to the project, including ray tracing support, FSR, procedural level alterations and classic series elements such as Combine gunships. The engine commit rate has also increased recently.
What changes in practice?
Nothing has been officially confirmed by Valve. There is no trailer, release date or gameplay details. The mention strengthens the speculation, but the game remains unannounced. Fans should treat HLX as a real internal codename without assuming it is exactly the traditional Half-Life 3.
The last major franchise release was Half-Life: Alyx. Since then, Valve has focused on live-service titles like Deadlock and updates to CS2 and Dota 2. The GameSoundCon mention is the strongest public signal in a long time about Valve HLX Half-Life 3. Until an official announcement, the community will continue analyzing every Source 2 update.
