Sony surprised horror fans during the September State of Play by confirming Until Dawn 2, a direct sequel to the 2015 interactive horror classic. The game launches exclusively for PlayStation 5 on January 28, 2027, with pre-orders opening as early as September 10.
What Happened
During Sony's announcement event, developer Supermassive Games revealed the first trailer for Until Dawn 2, featuring a collaboration with AdHoc Studio (the team behind Dispatch) for the story. Creative Director Stu Tilley summarized the vision in one sentence: "every choice, every interaction can yield dramatic consequences" — the exact principle that turned the original game into a cult phenomenon nearly a decade ago.
What Is an Until Dawn Game, Anyway?
For anyone who has never played: Until Dawn isn't a traditional action game, but rather an "interactive horror movie." The camera follows a group of characters in peril, and every decision the player makes — to run, hide, or fight back — can save or kill someone in the story. It's the so-called "butterfly effect": a seemingly small choice at the start can determine who survives until the end. There is no traditional "game over"; the story simply continues without that character.
Why It Matters
The original Until Dawn, released in 2015 on the PS4, is considered a genre milestone and inspired an entire lineup of similar games from the same developer, The Dark Pictures Anthology. The success was so huge that the game received an HD remaster for the PS5 in 2024 and even a cinematic adaptation in 2025. A direct sequel — something never done before for the franchise — shows that Sony is confident in the audience's appetite for narrative horror, especially at a time when investigative games and found-footage aesthetics are trending.
In Practice: What We Know About the Story
The plot follows "Dead True," a team of ghost-hunting YouTubers (accompanied by a pet chicken) investigating Akishima Island, a luxury resort in the South Pacific mysteriously abandoned in the 1970s. Peter Stormare returns as the enigmatic Dr. Hill, an iconic character from the first game. The playable cast includes Izzy, Owen, Mina, Nate, Reagan, Luke, Josie, and Cameron — and, as series tradition dictates, not everyone will survive until dawn.
What We Don't Know Yet
Sony has not yet revealed the complete voice/acting cast behind each character, nor has it shown full gameplay beyond the announcement trailer. There is also no confirmation regarding extra modes beyond the digital deluxe edition, which will feature a feature called "Death Diorama" to revisit fatal scenes from different angles.
Context
Until Dawn started as a PlayStation 3 project designed for the PlayStation Move motion controller, but it was overhauled and finally released in 2015 on the PS4 as a traditional controller game. Nearly a decade later, the franchise has grown into its own mini-universe within Sony, spanning games, a remake, a movie — and now, finally, a numbered sequel.
