Unreal Engine 6 Blueprints and Actors will be removed from Early Access, according to Tim Sweeney's announcement at Unreal Fest Tokyo 2026 on November 3. The Epic Games CEO revealed a radical change: Blueprints and Actors will be eliminated (not merely deprecated) starting with Early Access, targeted for the end of 2027. The C++ Gameplay Framework will also be abolished, with game logic fully migrating to Verse and Scene Graph.
What happened?
During the keynote in Tokyo, Sweeney confirmed the strategy had shifted from what was announced in June at Unreal Fest Chicago. Previously, Blueprints and Actors would remain in early UE6 versions and be deprecated later. Now they will be eliminated from the beginning of Early Access. C++ will continue for low-level systems like rendering and physics, but not for the gameplay framework. Epic plans AI-powered conversion tools to help migrate Blueprints and C++ to Verse. Projects on UE5 can continue on the 5.x branch, with a 5.9 preview coming soon. Attendee reports and GameMakers JP confirmed the tone of the presentation, including Sweeney's apology for the painful change.
Why this matters
This is one of the biggest shifts in Unreal Engine history. Blueprints are the most widely used visual scripting system in the engine, and Actors form the foundation of nearly all gameplay. The change aims for higher productivity, better content portability across games and ecosystems (such as Fortnite), and stronger compatibility with AI-assisted development. Sweeney called the decision “painful” and apologized to the community, noting that Epic itself is migrating Fortnite without service interruption. This impacts millions of developers who built careers and projects around these systems.
What changes in practice
Developers who rely on Blueprints will need to learn Verse and Scene Graph. Epic promises AI-assisted migration tools. Existing UE5 projects will not be forced to migrate immediately. UE6 Early Access remains targeted for the end of 2027. This could accelerate metaverse experiences and AI-driven games, but will require significant adaptation from the engine’s user base. The transition will be gradual for those remaining on UE5, but the engine’s future is Verse-first.
