Unity-MCP RQL: open-source plugin lets AI agents edit Unity scenes with previews

The open-source Unity-MCP project (Unity-MCP RQL in version 1.0), maintained by Ivan Murzak, received an important update that replaces dozens of individual tools with a query language called RQL (Reflection Query Language). The change lets AI agents such as Claude Code, Cursor or Gemini query, inspect and edit scenes and assets in Unity more precisely and in batches.

What happened?

Version 1.0.0, released around October 15, 2026, consolidates roughly 30 data and Editor-operation tools into three main entry points: rql-query for reading, rql-mutate for changes and rql-schema for type discovery. Developers can ask the agent, for example, to list every object whose name starts with "Prop_" and return name and position, or apply bulk changes with a preview before confirming.

The plugin remains under the Apache 2.0 license and works both in the Editor and in runtime builds, which enables AI use for debugging or dynamic behavior inside compiled games. It offers more than 70 native tools, support for 14 AI clients and the ability to turn any C# method into a tool with a single attribute. This makes Unity-MCP RQL a practical bridge between language models and the Unity Editor.

Why it matters

AI agent tools for game engines are still fragmented. Adopting a unified query language like RQL reduces friction for anyone using language models to prototype scenes, tweak components or run tests directly inside Unity. Previewing bulk mutations also lowers the risk of accidental destructive changes.

The project is not official from Unity Technologies, but it positions itself as one of the more complete MCP bridges for the engine, alongside official options and other community plugins. At a moment when studios and independent tools are exploring agents for development, more expressive interfaces like Unity-MCP RQL can speed up the integration between AI and game creation.
