The Witcher 3: Xbox Owners Get Free PC Version on Microsoft Store

CD Projekt RED has confirmed that starting September 29, 2026, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on Xbox will feature Xbox Play Anywhere support. In practice, players who already own the game on the console can claim the PC version on the Microsoft Store without paying again.

What happened?

The Polish studio reaffirmed today across official channels and coverage from outlets like iXBT.games and Gamersky what was previously hinted at in the fine print of the remaster announced at gamescom: the September 29 update links the title to Xbox Play Anywhere.

Play Anywhere is Microsoft's program where a digital purchase on Xbox unlocks the same license on PC through the Microsoft Store. Save files, achievements, and progress follow your account, not the hardware.

What does this mean?

If you bought The Witcher 3 on Xbox (including the upgrade path Microsoft outlined for players who only owned the base game and gained the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions), the PC version on the Microsoft Store is included in the package. This is not a code for Steam, GOG, or Epic; it is the Microsoft Store edition.

Players on Steam or GOG keep their existing copies. CDPR has explicitly stated that this change does not affect versions sold on those storefronts.

In practice

  • On September 29, the free The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered update arrives for existing owners on PC (GOG, Steam, Epic), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
  • On Xbox, this same update activates Play Anywhere and grants access to the PC version on the Microsoft Store.
  • Progress and achievements will sync between the console, Windows PC, and handhelds compatible with the Xbox ecosystem, such as the Xbox Ally.

Japan Edition Details

CDPR also announced that the Microsoft Store PC version in the Japanese market will carry a CERO Z rating. This marks the first time a PC game from the studio has received this rating from the Japanese organization. According to the announcement, this does not alter copies on Steam and other storefronts.

Why does this matter?

The remaster is more than just a fresh coat of paint. CDPR has promised overhauled combat and movement, a redesigned skill tree, new monster behaviors, armor transmog, an expanded photo mode, and console mod support. Linking this to Play Anywhere reduces friction for players who split time between the living room TV and their PC—and removes any hesitation for those considering a repurchase just to play on computer.

What remains unchanged: there is no Play Anywhere for PlayStation, and the Switch 2 version remains a separate product, even though original Switch owners have a free upgrade path detailed by CDPR at the time of announcement. Xbox Wire already mentioned Play Anywhere in the original remaster announcement.
