Sweden blocks ChatGPT and Claude on government computers: Sweden's Government Offices (Regeringskansliet) blocked access to the ChatGPT and Claude websites on work computers starting October 26, 2026. Employees are directed to Microsoft Copilot.
What happened?
According to Sveriges Radio Ekot, the block aims to ensure information security, as using AI services without a formal contract can affect data protection. Digitalization director Mikael Wettercrantz highlighted examples of problematic use of open AI services. Sweden blocks ChatGPT and Claude for this reason.
Copilot underwent a security review and had settings strengthened. Some staff still access ChatGPT and Claude models through the internal Intric platform.
Why it matters
Other Swedish agencies, such as the Tax Agency and the National Board of Institutional Care, have already adopted similar blocks. The measure is not a national ban but reflects governments' trend toward tools with contracts and data controls.
