State of Play Drops GTA 6 Date, FF7 Revelation Gameplay, and Maneater 2

Sony held another edition of State of Play on Thursday (3), and the broadcast delivered bombshell after bombshell: confirmation of the Grand Theft Auto VI release date, unprecedented gameplay for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, and a wave of surprise announcements that have already gone viral among gaming fans.

GTA 6 finally gets a confirmed date

The highlight for a large portion of the audience was the official confirmation that Grand Theft Auto VI hits stores on November 19, 2026, following successive delays that had already become a running joke among Rockstar Games franchise fans. The hype around the game is so massive that any update about it usually dominates social media within minutes—and this time was no different.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation gets release date and showcases the Highwind

Closing out the first half of the event, Square Enix reserved one of the longest blocks of the broadcast for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the final chapter of the remake trilogy, arriving on April 8, 2027. The footage showcased each cast member with their unique abilities, alongside segments exploring the Highwind airship—including free piloting and parachute jumps across the map—chocobo-mounted combat, the new FITS class system, visits to Wutai and Rocket Town, and fast travel between previously visited regions.

Other highlights and surprise announcements

Besides the two heavy hitters, the State of Play brought a sequence of unexpected announcements that generated massive buzz. Marvel's Wolverine received a new trailer ahead of its September 15 launch, focusing on the origins of the mutant-hunting program that creates the Sentinels. Starting October 1, Ghost of Yotei is getting a hardcore single-player survival mode allowing players to switch between the game's cast and Jin, the protagonist of Ghost of Tsushima. Monster Hunter Wilds announced the Ascendance expansion, slated for 2027, featuring new monsters, gear, and regions to explore.

Among the most unusual reveals, Maneater 2 confirmed the return of the shark RPG that became a cult phenomenon in 2020—this time with the goal of escaping a luxury resort, also scheduled for a 2027 release. Meanwhile, Rhapsody in Scarlet introduced a fictional 1920s jazz-infused New York City, where players control a witch named Ellie accompanied by a magical wolf. The first-person horror game Hunter's Moon, set in the 17th century and inspired by historical witch hunts, arrives on October 26, while the isometric puzzle game Uncanyon, from the creators of Maquette, was announced by Annapurna Interactive for 2027.

Other titles also had their release dates reinforced during the event, such as Until Dawn 2 (January 28, 2027), Metro 2039 (February 4, 2027), and Gundam Rogue Orbit (March 5, 2027).

With so many announcements back-to-back, it is no surprise that Thursday's State of Play is already among the most talked-about topics of the day—mixing the relief of finally having a date for GTA 6 with the massive hype surrounding the grand finale of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy.
