State of Play Surprises with Wolverine Release Date, Monster Hunter Wilds Expansion & Ghost of Yotei Hardcore Mode

On Thursday (3), Sony hosted another edition of State of Play, and the broadcast did not disappoint anyone waiting for major gaming news. In just over half an hour of streaming, Sony revisited beloved franchises, confirmed release dates, and teased what is next for PlayStation.

Marvel's Wolverine Gets Release Date

The major highlight of the night was Marvel's Wolverine, developed by Insomniac Games. Sony confirmed that the game hits stores on September 15, 2026, and used the State of Play to showcase a new trailer focused on the sinister mutant-hunting program led by Bolivar Trask — the scientist responsible for creating the dreaded Sentinel robots in the X-Men comics and films. The footage reinforces the darker, more mature tone that Insomniac has been promising since the project was first announced.

Ghost of Yotei Receives Hardcore Survival Mode

Another announcement that thrilled the fan base was the confirmation that Ghost of Yotei will get a new "hardcore survival" mode for the single-player campaign starting October 1st. The update will also allow players to control characters other than the protagonist Atsu, including Jin Sakai, the hero of the modern classic Ghost of Tsushima — a fantastic nod for longtime fans of the saga.

Monster Hunter Wilds Gets 2027 Expansion

Capcom also made an appearance with the reveal of Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, an expansion to the 2025 hit arriving in 2027 featuring new monsters, brand-new gear, and regions to explore. Details are still sparse, but the teaser was enough to set social media ablaze among dedicated hunters.

Looking to the Future

Wrapping up the presentation, Sony reiterated that other major releases, such as God of War Laufey — slated for February 2027 — and the highly anticipated Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Naughty Dog's new project, may receive dedicated showcases in future events, further fueling PlayStation fans' expectations for the months ahead.

With so packed an information dump in just a few minutes, it is no surprise that September's State of Play is already trending among gamers — proving that even in an industry used to massive events, Sony still knows how to command the public's attention.
