Sony delivered an impressive showcase on Thursday morning (3) with another edition of State of Play, streamed live on PlayStation's official YouTube and Twitch channels. In just over half an hour, the presentation delivered a generous wave of announcements, highlighted by the long-awaited release date reveal for Final Fantasy VII Revelation.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation Finally Gets a Release Date
The high point of the event, as expected, came from the second part of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy. Square Enix confirmed that the game arrives on April 8, 2027, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, and Nintendo Switch 2—a simultaneous multiplatform launch, which is a rare move for the franchise.
The trailer also showcased gameplay updates that excited fans on social media. Among them is the return of the Highwind for open-world exploration, with Piko the chocobo now actively participating in combat. Another standout is the new uniform system, dubbed FITS, which lets players equip characters with different classes—such as Warrior, Knight, Black Mage, or Summoner—altering both their visual style and combat mechanics (Cid appeared as a Knight and Vincent as a Summoner, for example).
Exploration also received upgrades, including instant character switching without menu navigation and a grappling hook to scale rooftops and take shortcuts across environments. Another new feature is the ability to choose which party members participate in specific missions, which will affect dialogue and story outcomes. The Queen's Blood card game is also back, this time featuring a campaign focused on Red XIII.
Pre-orders are now live on the PlayStation Store, featuring the Mecha-Chocobo & Moogle summon Materia as an early-purchase bonus, alongside premium editions offering 24-hour early access and future story DLC.
Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei Show Up
Insomniac Games debuted a new trailer for Marvel's Wolverine, launching on September 15—meaning in less than two weeks—as a PS5 exclusive. The preview focused on the mutant-hunting program led by Bolivar Trask and the dreaded Sentinel robots, reinforcing the darker tone promised by the developer for the Canadian anti-hero.
Meanwhile, Ghost of Yōtei is getting extra content on October 1: a survival roguelike mode named "Most Wanted" and a story expansion titled "Echoes of Sekigahara," which promises a special appearance by Jin Sakai, the protagonist of the original Ghost of Tsushima.
More Games Announced During the Broadcast
The rest of the State of Play featured a healthy variety of genres. Monster Hunter Wilds gets the "Ascendance" expansion in 2027, bringing the new Skybound Eyrie region and monsters like the Elder Dragon Kushala Daora. Metro 2039 was confirmed for February 4, 2027, plunging players into the ruins of Moscow against the antagonist Hunter.
Crimson Desert received a coastal content expansion featuring swimming mechanics, slated for October 15, while Maneater 2, developed in partnership with Demiurge Studios, aims to expand the shark-protagonist formula in 2027. Rounding out the list are titles like Gundam Rogue Orbit (March 2027), Hunter's Moon (October 26), and the shadow-dropped Keeper, which launched on PS5 right during the stream.
With Final Fantasy VII Revelation dated, Wolverine right around the corner, and a massive wave of news, Thursday's State of Play proves that the second half of 2026 (and early 2027) will be packed with major releases for the PlayStation 5.
