Sony confirms PlayStation 6 development is progressing as scheduled

Sony has reaffirmed that development of its next gaming platform, referred to as the next-generation PlayStation (commonly called PlayStation 6), is progressing as scheduled.

The statement came from CFO Lin Tao during the presentation of Q2 FY2026 financial results on November 5. The company sold 2.6 million PS5 units in the quarter ended September 30, bringing the cumulative total to 97.9 million.

What Sony said

“Although new PS5 unit sales are gradually declining as expected at this stage of the console life cycle, the PlayStation platform continues to expand and grow in a stable manner,” Tao said.

Looking ahead: “Looking ahead to the next fiscal year, we aim to continue to enhance user engagement and further strengthen monetization through the release of strong titles and the expansion of our service. We also intend to make solid progress in preparing for the next-generation platform.”

From the next fiscal year (starting April 2027), there will be investment in the new platform. Tao stressed the importance of prioritizing the new hardware and making the necessary investments, with an announcement “at an appropriate time in the future.”

Memory and costs

Sony said it has secured enough memory components for the next fiscal year despite the global memory shortage that has driven up costs. In the current year, the company offset increases through adjustments to promotions, pricing, and additional cost reductions, keeping hardware profitability at levels similar to the previous year.

There is still no release date, price, or official specifications for the next console. Previously, CEO Hiroki Totoki said the date had not yet been decided.

The update provides reassurance amid concerns about component shortages and high memory costs, which earlier reports suggested could exceed $680 for memory and storage alone on the next hardware.
