Sony confirms PlayStation 6 development is on schedule

Sony has confirmed that development of the PlayStation 6 is on schedule. The statement was made by chief financial officer Lin Tao during the company's second-quarter fiscal 2026 earnings call on Thursday, November 5.

According to Tao, work on the next generation of PlayStation is "progressing as scheduled" and the company intends to make "solid progress" on preparations over the next fiscal year, which begins in April 2027. Investment in the new platform will also begin from the next fiscal year.

Tao added that Sony has already secured the memory components needed for the next fiscal year, despite the global RAM shortage that has been pushing up hardware costs — one of the market's biggest concerns about the future console.

The confirmation comes alongside strong PlayStation numbers: the PS5 sold 2.6 million units in the quarter ended September 30, reaching 97.9 million consoles sold worldwide. With the launch of GTA 6, the console is expected to pass 100 million units next quarter. Sony's gaming revenue grew 9% year on year, the segment's operating income rose 89%, and monthly active users hit a record 127 million in September.

Sony has not yet announced a launch date for the PS6. CEO Hiroki Totoki had already said this year that no date has been decided. Unconfirmed rumors point to a possible 2028 window, but the company has confirmed no timeline.
