Sega pulls Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition from sale after AI upscaling backlash

Sega and Creative Assembly have temporarily removed Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition from digital stores after a disastrous launch. The updated version of the 2011 strategy game arrived on October 13, 2026, and within less than 48 hours it received an Overwhelmingly Negative rating on Steam, with complaints about bugs, performance issues, and art that players accuse of being upscaled with generative AI.

In the joint statement posted on Steam and Sega’s social channels, the companies acknowledge the problem: “We’re aware that Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition has fallen short of both your expectations and our own standards. We’ve seen your feedback, comments, and reviews. We agree that the current experience is not where it needs to be.”

As a result, they are working with platform holders (Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, and GOG) to remove the game from sale and reinstate the original 2011 version while they investigate the causes. Existing owners of the Complete Edition retain access. Sega and Creative Assembly say they are working closely with their development partner (MATABOO is listed as co-developer) to identify the issues and deliver improvements.

What drove the reaction

The Complete Edition promised improved visuals, 1440p/4K UI scaling, modernized controls, more than 50 additional playable factions, ultrawide support, a 64-bit upgrade, and Japanese and Chinese localization. Instead, players reported unit art with extra fingers, faces merging into helmets, and other distortions typically associated with AI upscaling. Long-standing bugs from the original game also remained, and the switch from Steam Workshop to Mod.io broke years of community mods.

Important: neither Sega nor Creative Assembly has officially confirmed the use of generative AI. The accusations come from players and visual analysis of screenshots shared on Reddit and other platforms. The official statement avoids the topic and focuses on “investigating the causes.”

Why it matters

The episode highlights the ongoing tension between rapid remasters and quality expectations. At a moment when the industry is openly discussing the use of AI tools in production, a release that appears to have applied careless and undisclosed upscaling generated immediate rejection. Pulling the product from sale in two days is rare and signals the weight of feedback from strategy communities and long-time Total War players.
