Sega pulls Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition from stores after AI upscaling accusations and criticism

Sega and Creative Assembly announced the temporary removal of Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition from digital stores just days after its October 13, 2026 launch. The decision followed a wave of player criticism pointing to bugs, performance issues and evidence of AI-upscaled artwork.

What happened?

The Complete Edition, developed in partnership with MATABOO, promised updated visuals, 1440p and 4K UI scaling, modernized controls, more than 50 playable minor factions, Japanese and Chinese voice acting, and a 64-bit upgrade. Instead, the game received overwhelmingly negative Steam reviews (around 15% positive out of more than 4,000 ratings) and was delisted.

Players shared screenshots showing typical AI upscaling artifacts on unit cards: faces merging with helmets, extra fingers and blurred details. The official statement from Sega and Creative Assembly, posted on X and Steam on October 15, does not explicitly mention AI, but admits the game “has fallen short of both your expectations and our own standards”.

The official response

In the statement, the companies say they are working with platforms to remove the Complete Edition from sale and reinstate the original 2011 game while they investigate the issues. Existing owners retain access to the Complete Edition. Sega and Creative Assembly say they are collaborating with their development partner to identify the causes and deliver improvements.

The withdrawal comes amid a broader discussion about the use of generative AI in games. Other studios, such as Level-5, have already publicly apologized for similar uses in promotional materials.

Why it matters

The case illustrates the growing tension between pressure for quick remasters and players’ expectations of handcrafted quality, especially in beloved franchises like Total War. The lack of clear disclosure about AI tools and the visibly problematic results generated a strong and immediate reaction.
