RTX Remix 1.6: NVIDIA Brings Experimental Path Tracing to Minecraft Java Edition

NVIDIA has released RTX Remix 1.6 (also listed as 1.6.1 on GitHub), bringing experimental path tracing support to Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1 through a Fabric mod.

What changed in RTX Remix 1.6?

RTX Remix is NVIDIA's open-source platform for remastering classic games with path-traced lighting, PBR materials, and RTX technologies. The standout addition in this version is the beta mod that applies the Remix renderer directly to Minecraft Java using a new API-based pipeline for improved performance instead of the older interception method.

The mod includes a PBR resource pack and a demonstration map created in partnership with BlockWorks. Players with a GeForce RTX 30 or newer GPU, NVIDIA driver 616.92 or later, and Windows 10/11 can experience realistic lighting, reflections, shadows, and global illumination in block worlds thanks to RTX Remix 1.6.

Other 1.6 improvements

  • DLSS 5 integration with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering and artistic controls in the Toolkit.
  • Multi Frame Generation up to 6x on RTX 50 Series GPUs.
  • Native Windows on ARM support.
  • Asset pipeline improvements with ComfyUI 2.0 and HDR OpenEXR support.

According to NVIDIA and community reports, the Minecraft path tracing also benefits from optimizations that can improve performance on AMD GPUs (around 20% in some tests with recent drivers). The mod is in beta: compatibility with other mods is limited and some blocks or situations may show artifacts.
