Resident Evil 2 Remake PS5 sales jump 64% after Cregger's film

Resident Evil 2 Remake PS5 sales jumped 64% in the week after Zach Cregger's film opened, according to Alinea Analytics. The 2023 Resident Evil 4 remake rose 54% in the same PlayStation 5 cut.

The figure isolates the premiere effect from the sale Capcom started about ten days before the movie hit theaters. In the raw cut, RE2 Remake nearly doubled PS5 sales. IGN and IT Home carried the same set this Tuesday.

What happened?

Cregger's Resident Evil opened on September 18, 2026 and is already the most profitable title in the film series. Geekiki logged the US$ 100 million mark in the United States alone. Alinea, through analyst Rhys Elliott, measured what that did in game stores.

On Steam the push was smaller: +11% for RE2 Remake and +14% for RE4 Remake. On PlayStation, revenue for the two remakes rose 80% and 84%. Part of that revenue jump comes from full price returning after the sale band — RE2 Remake on the US store went from US$ 39.99 to US$ 7.99 at the start of the promotion.

Why it matters

Game adaptations rarely move the old catalog this clearly. Here the film and the discount ran together, and Alinea tried to split them. Even without the sale, the studio would still have seen dozens of extra percentage points on PS5.

Daily players came back too. RE2 Remake went from about 78,000 to nearly 116,000 players a day across platforms, up 48%. RE3 Remake daily players rose 25%, RE4 Remake 24% and Resident Evil Requiem 20%. Elliott notes Requiem is already the strongest game in the franchise by revenue and should pass the RE4 remake's US$ 600 million.

What changes in practice

  • Anyone who skipped the remakes now finds a new queue of people returning to Raccoon City.
  • The effect is far more visible on PS5 than on PC.
  • The film covers the period parallel to RE2, which helps explain why that remake leads the jump.
  • Capcom's sale pulled part of the curve forward; the film held interest the following week.

None of this erases the discount. The honest reading is film plus low price, not cinema alone. Still, Alinea's no-sale cut shows Resident Evil 2 Remake PS5 sales did not explode only because of a red sticker.
