RE Engine REX is the name of the evolution Capcom wants to apply to the engine behind Resident Evil, Monster Hunter and Street Fighter. Satoshi Ishida presented the plan at Capcom Open Conference RE:2026 in Tokyo on October 2, 2026. REX means RE neXt Engine: a staged upgrade, not a brand-new engine.
What happened?
According to GameBiz, as reported by VGC and Eurogamer, RE Engine REX answers three pressures. Games have grown so large that builds and iteration are slowing down. More than 2,000 developers use RE Engine, including international staff and people from other tools. Capcom wants AI inside the pipeline, not bolted on later. RE Engine has been in development since 2014, debuted in Resident Evil 7 in 2017 and underpins about 30 titles.
What RE Engine REX adds
Ishida listed components. RE:Dox standardizes data processing across formats. RE:UI separates appearance from state so tools stay lighter. RE:Log swaps text logs for identifiers. RE:Flows is visual scripting that becomes standard code. RE:Runtime reworks the core to process many characters in batches, with a layer called RE:C++.
The goal of RE Engine REX is an engine where AI understands code, generates programs and runs automated playtests to catch bugs. Ishida spoke of teams that “create games together with AI.” Some technology has already been open-sourced to train those systems. RE:Dox, a .NET data library, landed on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license.
What Capcom says it will not do
RE Engine REX does not mean Capcom has started generating in-game art with AI. In June the company told investors that generative AI is meant to speed up routine work and free time for creation, and that creativity at the core stays human. Its vice president of development and AI solutions had already said the technology would not produce art.
The distinction matters. As described, RE Engine REX targets code, data, tools and testing, not textures or models in place of artists. Ishida gave no timetable for when automatic program generation or AI playtests enter production.
Why it matters
RE Engine is the base for Resident Evil, Monster Hunter Wilds, Street Fighter 6, Pragmata and Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Any workflow change touches those studios’ calendars. The official conference listed the RE Engine REX talk for the morning of October 2 at Ariake.
